A good summer holiday

The summer holidays are now upon us, and we’ll all get a much needed break after a very hectic working year. I’ll try to pass on my experiences of how to have a good summer holiday

Remember to take a long unbroken holiday! I have several times had to split up my holiday because of summer meetings, conferences, etc. Each time I have been left with a feeling of having had too short a summer holiday, so my advice is: take 3 weeks.

Try to be ”offline” at times!

It is very important that we in fact do get a break from work and have time to relax. This should go without saying, but in my view quite a lot of people by reflex check their email account regularly…

This is a very bad idea, and it spoils the sensation of having had a holiday.

We may have a tendency towards planning our holiday with the same precision that we plan our working life. Remember not to make plans for every single minute, create the space to be impulsive and take small trips in your local area – it is very nice to go on a mini holiday in Aarhus, Viborg or Næstved and be a tourist in our own towns.

Make a ”Back-to-work plan” for when you start again! The absolutely worst way of ending one’s holiday is by landing at the airport at 23:00 on Sunday night, getting up early the next morning, preparing 6 packed lunches, getting the children to school at 8:00 having one’s first meeting with the manager at 8:30, getting home at 17:00 to unpack one’s holiday luggage and handle the laundry. Plan slowing down before starting work and make a plan for answering the large number of emails waiting in the mailbox.

Have a very good summer holiday!
