AGRO is a strong player at the annual crop congress

From climate, crops and clover to seeds, weeds and wilt disease speakers from AGRO covered a wide range of topics at the annual crop congress “Plantekongres 2017”.

A large number of AGRO’s offices were unoccupied and quiet on January 17-18, 2017. Instead, you could have spotted many of AGRO’s employees in the crowd of approximately 1,900 farmers, advisers, researchers, students, business people and public servants that came to the annual crop congress that took place in Herning from January 17-18, 2017.

Apart from being strongly represented among the audience that came to listen to the words from the wise in the 178 talks delivered in the 92 sessions, we were also active as speakers. AGRO people – ranging from master students to professors – gave talks all of 22 times or participated in expert panels. Other departments at Aarhus University (ENG, BIOS, ANIS and MBG) gave a further 15 talks.

Debutant speaker postdoc Nina Høj Christiansen, JORNÆR, gave a talk about recycled fertiliser products and their phosphorous effect in the session ”Fra skrald til guld” (”From garbage to gold”).

- I work with residue products as a source of nutrients, which is a very concrete and applicable topic for farmers, so it is an important message to disseminate to the users. The crop congress provided a very good framework for doing so and for networking with those who have residue products available and those who would like to use the residue products, says Nina Høj Christiansen.

A familiar face at the crop congress is senior researcher Lise Nistrup Jørgensen, CROP. She shared her knowledge about pesticides in her talk about the status and future prospects of fungus control in cereals in the session ”Nyt om sygdomme og skadedyr” (”News about diseases and pests”).

- It is always life-affirming to participate in the congress. You meet people from the whole area of crops – advisers, business people, former and present students. You listen to lots of interesting talks that provide insight into research and the farmers’ practical everyday life, dance to good music into the wee hours, and come home completely exhausted – but a good time richer, says Lise Nistrup Jørgensen.

Head of Department Erik Steen Kristensen also participated in the crop congress.

- I am pleased that AGRO’s staff members are active and in demand as speakers at the crop congress. It is important that we share our knowledge and that we network and are visible at the congress, he says.
