Food for afterthought from junior VIP’s

In AGRO we have a group of young scientists who make a valuable contribution to the department. Our increasing number of PhD students and postdocs is one of the major reasons that we since 2010 have produced a significantly larger number of scientific articles and have experienced a corresponding improvement on the NTU ranking of the world’s best universities.

Our junior VIPs also have another advantage: They have many good ideas and a fresh take on things. This was one of the reasons that we held special meetings for the junior VIPs for the first time in AGRO’s history. At the meetings we presented the preliminary proposal for a strategy and flagships. The meetings provided the junior VIPs with the opportunity to comment on the strategy and the flagships.

The junior VIPs raised many questions and gave many good and constructive comments and input. I really appreciate this. Among other things, they asked for a clearer description of the individual flagships, their contents and their functions.

We will consider the many good ideas and work with them in the ongoing process that will lead us to the goal of having some well-defined flagships and clear descriptions of the ship captains’ roles and which competences the flagships and their captains must include in their crew.

The various inputs will be included in the discussions at the upcoming senior VIP meeting in November. Prior to the meeting all employees in AGRO have the possibility of commenting on the flagship descriptions. The preliminary descriptions of the four flagships can be read by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page. Any comments to the descriptions can be sent to Birgit S. Besides input to the strategy and flagships, we also got useful input from the junior VIPs regarding talent development, collaboration with the industry, and policy advice. We will send these ideas to the respective committees in AGRO, who can then work with them.
