Oxford University Press: Cessation of Negotiations

Denmark is without an agreement with Oxford University Press for 2026.

For 18 months, The Royal Danish Library has been negotiating with Oxford University Press (OUP) on behalf of educational and research institutions in Denmark for a new national licensing agreement.

After a prolonged negotiation process, it has not been possible to achieve a satisfactory outcome, neither financially nor regarding expectations related to the level of Open Access publishing. Therefore, Danish Universities, together with The Royal Danish Library, have decided to cease negotiations with OUP for a national licensing agreement for 2026.

This means that there will be no access to new content published in 2026. The absence of an agreement does not affect retroactive reading access or researchers' publishing opportunities. It only concerns access to reading new publications.

What does this mean for you?
It means that access to a number of online resources used in research, teaching, or studies will change. Below, you will find an overview of which online resources are affected and how you can still access the content.

What content does the national agreement cover?
The national agreement with Oxford University Press covers the publisher's journals, reference works, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and databases, including Oxford Scholarship, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Grove Art, and Grove Music. The absence of a national agreement means that you can no longer directly access these online resources.

How can you still gain access?

Journal Articles
There is still an option to access journal articles.

For researchers and educators: You can request the latest articles from Oxford's journals by searching for them in the library system at www.soeg.kb.dk. When you click on the desired article, you will be directed to a service form from which you can order the article. The articles can be shared for educational purposes or with colleagues, as long as it is done within the framework of your university's agreement with Tekst & Node.

For hospital staff and students: You can use The Royal Danish Library's ordering form for articles that you no longer have direct access to via the library system at www.soeg.kb.dk. Additionally, on The Royal Danish Library's website, you can find an overview of databases and plugins that you can use to find alternative paths to scientific articles.

Other Oxford Resources
In some cases, it will be possible to purchase individual e-books published by Oxford University Press via The Royal Danish Library's book ordering form. Both researchers, educators, students, and hospital staff can use this option.

Unfortunately, The Royal Danish Library cannot ensure access to the Oxford English Dictionary. The Royal Danish Library refers to Ordbogen.com, where access to several English dictionaries is available.

Alternative paths to reference works, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and databases cannot be established.
