Latest news on the PhD front

The PhD committee has replacements, next year’s Grand Meeting is being planned, and the PhD courses are in place.

This is the time of year when there are replacements in the local PhD committee and we have just recently found new student members for AGRO’s PhD committee. The new members are Kari Wolf, Bonnie Averbuch, Rasmus Emil Jensen and Peter Weber Jensen. Peter has also accepted a seat in the central GSST PhD committee.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the members Carmina Cabral, Nils Onnen and Bettina Pedersen, who are on their way out. Among other things, they organized a super good social event in connection with the Grand Meeting 2018. It is important to the committee’s work to have committed student members, and you have certainly lived up to that. Special thanks go to Carmina for having taken on the task for two years and for commuting to Aarhus to attend the meetings in the GSST PhD committee.

The student members are always ready to help other students regarding questions to the PhD studies.

Planning of the 2019 Grand Meeting and PhD courses

AGRO’s PhD committee is presently preparing the annual PhD Grand Meeting, which in 2019 will take place in April in Aarhus. The main theme will be ”Presentation techniques”, because this is something that means a lot to all the PhD students. A professional speaker will be responsible for a workshop regarding presentation techniques. We will touch on two-minute lightning talks, elevator talks, longer scientific presentations, use of presentation software, body language and much more.

The day will be a combination of talks and related group work. In addition, there will be an elevator talk competition with big prizes for the winner. The evening before, the students will have a social event in Aarhus. The aim of this evening is partly to get to know each other across geographical areas and partly to warm up to the academic day. We will send the final programme and possibility for registration in the beginning of 2019.

In addition to planning the Grand Meeting, we have also spent time on getting the PhD course programme for 2019 in place. In 2019 AGRO can offer the following courses:

  • Soil Deformation and Fragmentation: Visualization, Measurements, Modelling and Functioning, 18-23 March 2019
  • Description, sampling and classifications of Danish soils based on field studies, 6-12 May 2019
  • Hands-on Liquid Chromatography–Mass spectrometry course in the analysis of small molecules (phytochemicals, contaminants, primary metabolites) - June 2019
  • SOM and organically bound nutrients - turnover and stabilization, September to November 2019

Every year many of AGRO’s staff and students work hard to organise the courses and it is very positive that we have internal courses. It is very important for the students because they save time and money by taking internal courses. The courses also attract students from other institutions, which promotes learning during the course and contributes to putting AGRO on the map. Many thanks to those people who put time and effort into the courses.

You can find more information about our courses and our Journal Clubs as well as links to registration on AGRO’s PhD website. It is a good idea to sign up quickly because the courses fill up fast.
