Young soil scientist from AGRO is a winner
Researcher Emmanuel Arthur from JORD has won a prestigious international prize.
Although 35-year-old soil scientist Emmanuel Arthur from JORD has both feet planted firmly in the soil that he studies so intensely and so well, he is also a star in the sky with a wealth of scientific publications under his belt.
His impressive list of achievements has now earned him the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) 2017 Soil Physics and Hydrology Division Early Career Award. The award committee stated that although all candidates were strong and potential future winners, Emmanuel Arthur stood out. The committee cited his exceptional publication record for his career stage as one of the reasons for selecting Emmanuel Arthur for the award.
And no wonder: Emmanuel Arthur has been extremely productive since he began his PhD studies at Aarhus University in 2009. He has produced 42 scientific, peer-reviewed articles and more than 20 conference contributions since 2011. He earned his PhD in 2013 but even before that – in the years 2011 and 2013 he had already published seven peer-reviewed articles – all of which he was first author on.
Emmanuel Arthur’s ability to obtain funding also made a good impression on the award committee. His latest achievement in this area is a grant he was awarded from Villum Fonden’s Young Investigator Programme to the tune of DKK 4.5 mill. The grant enables him to work on his project “Application of water vapor sorption and spectroscopy for novel characterization of surface and engineering properties of soils” and also funds a postdoc, a PhD and purchase of data analyses software, in addition to facilitating soil data acquisition on a national scale.

The award committee also drew attention to Emmanuel Arthur’s substantial service with regard to reviewing manuscripts and proposals.
The award was presented at the ASA-CSA-SSSA 2017 Annual Meeting, which was held in Tampa, Florida, USA, from October 23-25, 2017. (ASA, CSA and SSSA stands for American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America, respectively).
