AGRO: A Great Place to Work
Every workplace exists to accomplish specific tasks and fulfill important missions – in other words, to get the job done. Research in Management & Leadership shows that this is most effectively achieved when employees feel a sense of belonging. This is crucial, regardless of whether the employment is short-term or long-term.
It is important for the department to continuously foster a positive international work culture, which is one of several reasons why AGRO’s Diversity and Gender Equality Committee last year conducted the survey; Agroecology Department Perception Survey.
The survey was open to all employees from April 24 to May 13, 2024, and to ensure broad accessibility, it was available in both Danish and English. The survey was designed with a series of five sections covering census information, perceptions of the gender gap, experiences with microaggressions and sexual harassment, and attitudes toward diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI). The survey was anonymous to encourage candid responses, and it was distributed via email.
As you can see in the report there are several key findings. From the department, we want to say thank you for your participation. The survey revealed areas to give further attention to such as diversity, inclusion, discrimination against minorities and reverse discrimination. Furthermore, microagressions were reported, especially around cross-cultural issues, gender and age. Finally, 11% of the respondents reported experiencing or witnessing sexual harassment with women disproportionately affected.
Initiatives to develop our international work culture
The AGRO management has discussed these findings and would like to reiterate that we do not accept harassment and microaggressions. We must all work to foster a respectful, inclusive and safe international work environment for everyone. To reinforce this commitment, we would like to communicate and remind everyone of the behavior we wish to see. At the department management and individual level, we must:
- Respect and support freedom of speech and academic freedom.
- Contribute to a cohesive and collaborative university and value diversity among colleagues.
- Contribute to create openness, trust, and timely communication at all levels.
- Demonstrate good leadership and strong collegial relationships in daily life.
- Respect a work-life balance that priorities both personal and professional development.
From an organizational development standpoint, we are also working on establishing a Mentor & Mentee program within the department. This voluntary initiative aims to continuously enhance and develop our department as an attractive workplace for current and future employees across all roles and positions. More details will be shared in the coming months.
We are also preparing for AGRO Career Development Days 2025. The career days will include elements of why career coaching is important, knowing your strengths and preferences; industry-, academia- or entrepreneurship as a goal, where to go from where you are etc.
In conclusion, the survey data serves as a foundation for monitoring progress, identifying areas for improvement, and forming valuable initiatives within our department. Our goal is to create a supportive environment where everyone can thrive, perform, and feel very valued.
On behalf of the AGRO Management,
Ida Thoft
