The use of teaching rooms at Nat and Tech

Faculty management at Tech has decided on some principles for the utilization of dry teaching rooms and that we must have mapped the use of teaching labs

Optimizing the use of dry classrooms

At the start of 2023, the faculty managements at Nat and Tech have decided on a number of general principles that will form the basis of the faculties' scheduling of teaching in dry classrooms. The background for this is both to ensure optimal schedules for both students and teachers and to ensure optimal utilization of an expensive resource – our teaching rooms.

The decision has been taken right now, partly because the faculties are financially challenged and therefore want to ensure optimal use of an expensive resource, and partly because the National Audit Office is currently taking a critical look at the universities' use of premises. Overall, it amounts to 4.5 billion of the ministry's grants to Danish universities (discounting DTU and CBS, which have a different arrangement) expenses per square meter, so it is natural that they also have a look at it.

If you have any questions about the above, you are welcome to contact your Head of department or Head of administration Niels Damgaard Hansen (ndh@au.dk).

Mapping the use of teaching laboratories

The registration of the use of teaching laboratories is currently too deficient for it to form a basis for optimizing the use. It is exclusively only the time that teacher-led teaching takes place in the laboratories that is registered, while the time used for setting up and taking down experiments etc. At the same time, we also know that the laboratories are used for another purpose – e.g. visitor service.

In order to ensure a fair basis, a project is being initiated together with the institutes with the aim of clarifying how we can ensure that all activities are registered in the future. Only when the registration is in place can it be determined whether there is also a basis for optimizing the use.
