World Soil Day 5 December

World Soil Day (WSD) was established in 2014 by the United Nations as an official anniversary to draw attention to the importance of maintaining a healthy and productive soil. The day should also be used to advocate for sustainable land resource management.

A good soil quality results in a better supply of water and nutrients for plant growth while increasing the soil's ability to transpose and retain environmentally friendly substances, thus ensuring cleaner water in streams, lakes and coastal areas. Most recently, the importance of the soil as carbon storage and climate regulator has been highlighted and the major emissions from the cultivation of carbon-rich soils have been the main focus.

In the JORD section, we have celebrated World Soil Day on 5 December for several years. This year, on the initiative of Lorraine and Saghar, we expanded the initiative to include all sections at AGRO, and as we simultaneously combine this activity with the two professor inaugural lectures, we get a really exciting day where we can find inspiration for collaborations and projects across of the sections.

We will hear short lectures on the threats to soil quality. Among other things soil erosion, which is an international focus area for this year's World Soil Day. We will also hear about some of the solutions we work with at AGRO. There will also be a poster session with 2-minute presentations of selected posters.

This year, it is possible to hear about the research laboratories at JORD and JORDNÆR, which analyses are being carried out, etc.

I look forward to an inspiring day.
